Welcome to Essential ECS, a podcast exploring the intersection of botanical medicine, compassionate care, and evolving public policy.

Hosted by Dave and Chela Coennen, Essential ECS brings together patients, caregivers, clinicians, researchers, advocates, and changemakers to explore real-world solutions for some of life's toughest challenges.

Whether you're navigating cancer, dementia, chronic illness, caregiving, aging, or simply seeking to better understand the endocannabinoid system and the role of botanical therapies, you're in the right place.

Conversations that empower patients, caregivers, clinicians, and advocates to improve quality of life through education, compassion, and informed choice.

Our conversations go beyond headlines and hype. We focus on what matters most:

  • Improving quality of life

  • Supporting comfort and calm

  • Empowering patients and caregivers

  • Exploring emerging research

  • Advancing sensible policy

  • Finding hope, meaning, and joy along the journey

At Essential ECS, we believe people deserve access to trustworthy information, compassionate support, and informed choices. Through thoughtful conversations and expert insights, we're helping bridge the gap between science, care, and policy—one episode at a time.

Featuring interviews of some superstars of cannabis medicine and cannabinoid research.

In 2010, after Chela’s mom, sixties glamor girl and television star Lisa Seagram, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, the couple was thrust into family caregiving and became fierce advocates for people living with dementia.

When her mother passed on February 1, 2019, the couple felt the need to share what they learned over their long journey: “Cannabis was by far the most effective medicine to ease the terrible behavioral symptoms of mom’s dementia,” says Chela Coennen.

In 2020, they launched Cannabis Helps Dementia podcast on Anchor.FM and distributed to all the podcast services.

In the coming year, their advocacy and podcast topics will expand to include others facing terminal illness and older people who might benefit from CBD, Medical Cannabis, and other "taboo" Natural Medicines. Subscribe to stay tuned!
